Barium is an element with a high anatomic number, which absorbs much of the x-ray beam. This dense liquid has essentially no taste, is not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, and has no physiologic effects on the body. It is ingested by patients to fill and opacify the lumen of the gastrointestinal structures so that they can be seen on radiographs.
